Fall Coming Out Workshop

by Joe Russo and Elizabeth Driscoll

Fearful? Anxious? Depressed? Don’t know who to talk to or where to turn? If you are struggling with coming out as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender person, you may feel like you are alone in this coming out process. However, you are not!

Many gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender individuals have struggled and survived this process by receiving support and education at past Gay Alliance Coming Out Workshops. This fall the workshops will be offered again at the Gay Alliance on Thursday nights starting Sept. 11, 2008 and ending Oct. 16, 2008 from 6:30pm-8:30p.m.  Meetings will be held in the Nopper Room on the 5th floor of the Auditorium Center (875 E. Main Street).  There is free parking in the back of the building, off of College Ave.

Coming out is a process which varies for each individual.  Cultural and religious influences can affect you and we will explore and discuss these issues.  We will also discuss the coming out process, the risks and rewards of coming out, self-esteem issues, overcoming fears, and work and relationship concerns.  The group will be supportive in nature and it will serve as a sounding board for participant’s concerns about their unique situation in coming out.

The group experience can be an important step in helping you navigate the coming out process. Group size will be limited to 12 members and safety and confidentiality will be maintained throughout the six weeks. Coming out is an individual choice and all participants’ ways of coming out will be respected.

Co-leaders, Joe Russo, Psy. D., CGP and Elizabeth Driscoll, LCSW-R, CGP, both have clinical experience working with the LGBT community in Rochester.  Ms. Driscoll is a licensed clinical social worker and certified group psychotherapist in private practice in Rochester. She works with adults and adolescents. She offers individual, couple, family and group therapy.  Dr. Russo is a licensed psychologist and certified group psychotherapist in private practice in Rochester.  He offers individual, couple, family and group therapy. Specialty areas are LGBT issues and addictions.

The workshop is open to adults 18 and older.  Registration fee is $60 with scholarships based on need.  To register or for more information call Jeanne at 585-244-8640 ext. 14 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Looking forward to seeing you!

NCAVP warns of Increase in Hate Violence
Written by Scott Fearing
Friday, 01 August 2008
August 1, 2008 The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Projects, a collaboration of LGBT Anti-Violence Projects from around the country is reporting a sharp increase in the number of extremely brutal anti-LGBT violence incidents being reported. Locally the Community Safety Program and the Anti-Violence Project at the Gay Alliance has noticed an increase in calls during the past month. Most recently the staff of the Gay Alliance worked with the family and the victim of a brutal anti-gay attack in the Buffalo area. While this Buffalo attack was a stranger attack, many of the documented cases around the country have been linked to internet dating sites as well as pick-up assaults. Please familiarize yourself with safe dating practices and be thoughtful of your own safety and well being when meeting with anyone that you don't know well. If you face any incidents of hate, bias or violence your first call should be to the local law enforcement, but, also be certain to report to the Gay Alliance Anti-Violence Project at 585-697-3373 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
