Partner Abuse and Violence

Abuse is not "just drama." No one has the right to be abusive. No one deserves to be abused.Abuse is NOT

Partner abuse, also called intimate partner violence or domestic violence, is a pattern of behavior used by one person to gain and maintain power and control over their partner, former partner, or someone they are dating. These behaviors are coercive, manipulative, and often isolating. Abusive partners may or may not use physical violence or may use a range of physical, emotional, sexual, economic, and/or cultural abuse.

Partner abuse happens in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight communities and crosses all social, educational, ethnic, racial, and economic lines. An individual's size, strength, gender presentation, personality, or politics can not be used to determine if s/he may be abusive.

If your partner is abusive or if you are abusive to your partner or even if you are not sure the Gay Alliance Anti-Violence Project can help with the following free and confidential support services:

  • Safety planning
  • Court accompaniment
  • Law enforcement advocacy
  • Short-term counseling and evaluation
  • Referral to LGBT-sensitive legal, medical and mental health services
