Allies play a vital role in making schools safer for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. In fact, the first Gay-Straight Alliance was the idea of a straight ally.
Students created Ally Week as a way to build upon the unifying work GSAs do across the country by encouraging people to be allies against anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Whether you belong to a GSA or not, Ally Week is the perfect time for you and your friends to sign the Ally Pledge.
Ally Week takes place toward the beginning of the school year. Ally week is sponsored by GLSEN.
PFLAG was founded in 1973 by the late Jeanne Mansford. It promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
We are the Rochester, NY, chapter of “Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays.” Here you’ll find support, education, and allies who advocate for full inclusion of the LGBT people we love.
We meet the third Sunday of every month from 1:00-3:00 at
Open Arms Metropolitan Community Church
