Introducing the ROC PRIDE Games!
Uhm, did you say Gay Ice Hockey in July?
YES WE DID! Hockey and Roller Derby!
Welcome to the Inaugural year of the ROC PRIDE Games! Brainchild of Chris Woodworth, Director of Programming and Marketing at the Bill Gray’s Iceplex in Henrietta.
He brought his idea to the Gay Alliance and then to the Monroe County Sports Commission and voila, a new traditions is born!
Chris told The Empty Closet Newspaper, “The concept initially started as running a hockey tournament during Pride weekend. Once we sat down to discuss this with the Sports Commission, we quickly came up with the idea of adding additional sports and the creation of a pride specific sports invitational – the Roc Pride Games.”
“I see the Pride games growing very quickly and eventually having numerous sporting events during Pride weekend. There does not seem to be any other city doing something like this as a part of their Pride, so it makes this unique. We are in the geographic center of the Northeast, so it is easy for people to travel here and we have a large gay population. I feel that this event will become a core part of Rochester Pride, adding a new family friendly layer that will potentially bring thousands of visitors into Rochester, all of which will be able to see our great city and participate in the Pride festivities.”
The 2013 line-up consists of a Hockey Tournament starting on Friday and going through Sunday. It is expected that visiting hockey teams will take time out to march in the Pride Parade and attend the Festival. All hockey games will be free and open to the public. There is still time for teams to register. Follow the link above.
Also on the 2013 schedule is Roc City Roller Derby’s, “Somewhere Over the Painbow”, featuring Roc Stars vs Vermont’s Green Mountain Derby Dames & B-Sides vs. Crown City Rollerz (Cortland, NY). Roc City Roller Derby is extending their regular season to participate in the Roc Pride Games. Bouts will be on Friday and Saturday night of Pride Weekend. As is their custom to donate proceeds to non-profits, the profits from this weekend’s bouts will go the benefit the Gay Alliance. Visit the ROC PRIDE Games website for ticket information.
