Pride 2010

WHEREAS: The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley has been serving the Rochester community for over 37 years, advocating for the elimination of heterosexism and will be hosting Rochester’s 21st annual Gay Pride Celebration, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender local, regional, national and international history with a variety of events to appeal to everyone; and

The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley is the only not-for-profit agency specifically providing non-HIV programs and services to the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgendered community in the Greater Rochester area and four adjacent counties; and

The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley houses a youth program that serves over 300 youths annually through support groups, crisis intervention, social activities and leadership development as well as services to assist with the coming out process; and

The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley established The Empty Closet Newspaper in 1971, the oldest running newspaper of its kind published in New York State, which serves the lesbian, gay and bisexual community with information that was inaccessible at the time via mainstream media sources.

NOW, THEREFORE, We, Robert J. Duffy, Mayor of the City of Rochester, New York, and Matt Haag, City Councilmember, do hereby proclaim July 11, 2010 to be:

Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley Day
