Sage Rochester

SAGE Rochester, a program of the Gay Alliance, is a voice for Rochester’s older gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer, and intersex adults. We provide opportunities for personal growth, connection to community, and access to senior services. We are open to all ages and members in the community, but our concentration is in educating, advocating, and serving the needs of the fifty-plus LGBTQ population.

As an affiliate of SAGE USA (Services and Advocacy for GLBTQI Elders) we receive up-to-the-minute information on research and policy issues that effect older adults and have access to state and national resources.

SAGE Rochester is a program of the Gay Alliance designed for LGBTQ people over 50.  SAGE operates out of the LGBTQ Resource Center, 100 College Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607.  All programs are open to the public and all are welcome. Senior Yoga is $5 per person and is offered every Tuesday and Thursday unless specified in the calendar. Multilevel Mat Yoga for all ages is $15 per person. A donation of $3 is requested for catered lunches.  All programs are subject to change and all members are responsible for their own transportation.

Additional Programming

We also offer fun, off site activities and seasonal programming. We have a monthly breakfast group, coffee times, summer picnics, hayrides, seasonal dances, movies out, museum tours, fish fry’s and much more.

SERVICES & ADVOCACY FOR GLBTQI ELDERS (SAGE) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Our mission is to lead in addressing issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender aging.

In communities across the country, SAGENet- SAGE’s network of local affiliates, is building a movement to reduce isolation, improve financial security and enhance the qualitiy of life for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults.

Through SAGENet, these local leaders draw on the wisdom of their peers to implement programs and services that address the most urgent issues facing LGBT elders.

SAGENet is comprised of 27 affiliates located in 20 states around the country, across every region of the country. These affiliates provide services and programs to LGBT older people in their local communities. They also work on local, state, and federal advocacy to ensure that public policies better support the needs of LGBT elders.

SAGE Rochester is the major provider of social and educational programs to enhance the lives of older gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (GLBTI) individuals.

To enrich the environment of the overall community, SAGE Rochester educates the community about relevant GLBTI issues and supports aging GLBTI individuals.


Organize activities such as social and life-enriching programs and events for older GLBTI individuals.

Identify and make available resources to older members of the GLBTI community that affect their financial, retirement, legal, medical, and other needs and/or interests.

Serve as a resource in the general community for information about older GLBTI individuals and their interests and/or needs.

Develop a strong working relationship with community partners knowledgeable about aging issues.

Becoming a member of the Gay Alliance/SAGE Rochester includes a subscription to the Empty Closet newsletter, which is one of the longest continuously published LGBT newspapers in the world. Be sure to look for the articles and activities involving SAGE Rochester as well as everything else the Empty Closet has to offer. Your membership includes our very own newsletter: SAGE Rochester Connections, which will keep you up-to-date on what is happening with SAGE Rochester. You will also receive email blasts from the Gay Alliance keeping you informed on their activities. The Gay Alliance library is available to take out books and moves to read or watch at home at your leisure. Our website will give you additional information about all of our activities.

We are always looking for volunteers and we need you. In fact, without your help or support, we would not be able to continue our activities, outreach and advocacy. If you have some time and energy that you’d like to give to SAGE Rochester, please let us know. What could you do? Well, you can join our program committee or write an article for us to go in our newsletter, you can host an event, teach a workshop, or just help clean up after an event.

We also welcome donations to help us continue our strong vision. Donations over a $30.00 membership are greatly appreciated. We need your help to continue to grow, and we know you’ll be part of our continued success.
